Roleplaying communities often have lots of acronyms, so Foxy helpfully wrote up a guide for us. Many thanks to the others who have added their own ideas and examples. Feel free to submit additional terms for us to add.
Character Kill (CK)
Killing a character or a situation/scene where a character gets killed (permanently).
Character Kill Rights (CK Rights)
An agreement between players where an in-game death caused by other player(s) will result in the permanent death of one or more of the characters involved.
- CK rights typically apply between both parties, even if one is the aggressor -retaliation is possible from the ones being threatened.
- Players are welcome to grant kill rights to each other if they feel the storyline has escalated to the point of lethal consequences, but they should document any agreement in case of disagreement.
- Players can also open a CK ticket to request rights from the staff
- CK rights are never a secret or a surprise to the involved parties.
Emote
A description of your character's actions and/or behavior, and how they do it.
It can also refer to the command used to send an emote.
Jimmy kicks a pebble across the street in frustration, grumbling quietly to himself./meloud kicks a pebble across the street.
In Character (IC)
This is the roleplay of your character: their actions and their words.
/me waves excitedly, leaning on the fencepost. "Howdy!"
Out of Character (OOC)
When you talk outside of your character's role, having nothing to do with roleplay.
- Talking about topics like what you are eating at the moment or who won the last soccer match.
- This is only to be talked about in the OOC tab in the chatbox, though it should be avoided when you're in a bigger group as it can disrupt the ongoing roleplay.
Metagaming (MG or Meta)
When you receive information outside the game and use it in the game. You get messaged by your friend on Discord saying that he is in danger so you use that information to move directly to his position, without ever receiving that information In Character. Remember: your character does not know that.
Non Player Character (NPC)
A character that's not controlled by another player.
They are mostly played by STs to act in events, to make the environment more lively, or to challenge characters.Jimmy meets someone from the so called SCARS this group is a NPC Faction played by Storytellers and not by fellow Players.
Permissions (Perms)
The ability to access someone else's vehicle or safehouse.Alexa's agreed to give Jimmy a ride but he's unable to get into the vehicle because of permissions. He might ask "/ooc Perms?" to let Alexa know they'd need to update their vehicle's permissions to allow passengers in their car.
Player Character (PC)
Characters that are played by your fellow roleplayers on the server.Jimmy mentions in "Great Roleplaying" that he had a blast meeting Bob's PC in town today. Bob is the player and his PC would be the character he plays.
Ironman or Ironman Challenge
When a player has decided they will take any in-game death of their character as permanent.
Some players choose to add special rules like not taking glitch deaths, but taking any PvE or PvP death as permanent. This can bring excitement and difficulty to a playthrough if things are getting stale.
Player versus Environment (PvE)
It involves players engaging in situations with NPCs, obstacles, mechanics or creatures that are not controlled by other players but are part of the game's environment.
Deaths from PvE are not enforced at Deadline -you may respawn and choose to ignore it occurred, or play it as a non-lethal consequence.Jimmy is fighting off a horde of zombies to get loot when he trips and gets devoured. He respawns, appearing at the local hospital. He chooses to call a friend for a pickup, roleplaying he was less seriously injured.
Player versus Player (PvP)
Engaging a hostile or combat focused scene against a other player.
PvP deaths without previously granted CK rights require the killer/surviving participant(s) to open a ticket to resolve the consequences.Jimmy shoots another player with his gun. In the battle, Jimmy dies in-game to his wounds.
Powergaming (PG)
Powergaming is the term used when a situation is forced on another character or when someone gives themselves an unfair and unrealistic advantage.
- Remember to give your fellow roleplayers a fair chance, stay realistic, and use "would," "tries", or "attempts" in your emote.
- Do not perform multiple complicated actions in a single emote. It gives the other player no chance to respond or intervene reasonably.
Jimmy aims his gun at you and pulls the trigger. You deflect the bullet with your knife. Now you want to give Jimmy a taste of his own medicine. You emote that you shoot a bullet right between his eyes and that he is now dead, without giving him a chance to react./meloud gets off her motorcycle, pulls out her shotgun, crosses the street, walks behind Sheila, and puts the gun to the other woman's back.
Safehouse (SH)
A mechanically protected area in game where people/groups live, which prevents people who don't belong to the member list from seeing items or picking them up.
Once a person has been added to a safehouse they are able to access items normally, but they should still be aware of robbery rules.Jimmy arrives at Alexa's place but can't pick up the amazing food she prepared on the table. He might ask "/ooc add Jimmy to SH?"
Storyteller (ST)
Staff members that create exciting stories and encounters for you, breathing interactive life into the world you are playing in.
They also moderate the Discord channels and make sure everyone is playing by the rules.
