Each character should be a new experience. You may see this called New Life Rule as well.
These rules apply when creating a new character, whether your previous one(s) are dead or shelved.
🎭 New Character, New Experience Rules
To ensure a fresh experience and prevent carryover, you may not interact with anything related to your previous character. If your prior character(s) died, there's some specified rules that change after 2 weeks of actively playing the new character.
These rules are here help keep the game fair and immersive while encouraging players to explore new dynamics and stories.
Unique Personality and Background
Your new character must have a noticeably different personality, backstory, and motivations from your previous ones.
New Spawn Location
You cannot start in the same town or area where your prior character(s) lived, frequently visited, or originally spawned.
If it's been 2 weeks since your prior character(s) died who lived there, you may return to the area. You are still **not allowed to use any info you gained playing a prior character such as base locations where you might know where loot is, names of specific people to call on the radio for help, or where you know there's a car you can claim immediately.**It doesn't matter how long it has been -it will be considered metagaming.
New Relationships
Build friendships and connections with entirely new people. You cannot share backstory links to existing characters your prior characters were tied to.
No Returning to Old Groups
You may not rejoin any group that your previous character(s) were part of, even if they had already left that group before their death or shelving.
If it's been 2 weeks since your prior character(s) involved in that group died, you may open a ticket to discuss joining said group(s). Be prepared to show that you've actively attempted to engage with other groups in the meantime as well as convincing roleplay that you should be allowed to join the group.
No Access to Old Belongings
You cannot claim or use any items your prior character(s) owned, even indirectly (e.g., through third parties).
Limited Assistance from Old Groups
Groups your previous character(s) were connected to cannot provide you with significant help, resources, or benefits.
This prevents the issue of hanging around your old groups but not "officially joining" as a way to circumvent the rules.
No Revenge or Retribution
You cannot target or pursue the group or individuals responsible for harming or killing your prior character(s).
If it's been 2 weeks since your prior character(s) died and you find the story has taken itself into this direction, you may open a ticket to discuss this with staff. Be prepared to show that this happened organically and not at your character's instigation.
❔ But I want to play with my friends!
We know you want to play with your friends, but letting your new character come back to the same people, base, loot, and re-engage in the same story isn't fair. Please, try to branch out and involve yourself with other people -step out of your comfort zone and be open to new possibilities.
If you really want to play with people you were attached to in the past, you can both create new characters and make a new story together. Your friend can shelve or, better yet, embark on the final chapter of their character's story before joining you in making something new.
❔ What am I allowed to do?
Follow the rules above, but here are a few recommendations:
- Play your new character like a completely new experience
It's okay to talk to characters you interacted with previously, but don't beeline for them or prior groups ignoring other avenues of roleplay.
- Roleplay appropriately when you meet characters you've met before and don't fall immediately into old patterns.
- Avoid metagaming
You may go to places you've been before, but shouldn't be using knowledge you had from a prior playthrough about where things are or who you'd meet there.
We know it can be difficult to get into a new character so if you have trouble finding people, reach out on Discord. We encourage people to run into each other organically, but it's okay to share you're open to new things or struggling there. You can also talk to a staff member or open a ticket. We're happy to try to steer you to people to play with.

🎭 New Character, New Experience Rules
All characters on Deadline must follow the New Life Rules. These rules are in place to ensure that new and old players have the same starting experience. This means that older players won't have the benefit of connections and friends that new players would lack. It also prevents groups of players from excluding others and encourages interaction with the overall community.
New characters cannot be copies of previous characters. This includes: personality, backstory, motivations, appearances, and any significant details. They must not seem like a near exact copy of any previous character (during the current chapter) with only minor tweaks. There must be a noticeable difference between your characters.
You are allowed to play a similar type of character, but who they are as a person and their story must aim for a different narrative direction. Examples of a similar type would be: a criminal, a crafter, a trader, etc.
Your new characters cannot be related to or connected to any other characters you have played during the current chapter.
If any staff or players notice that there are too many similarities between your new and previous characters, you will be required to make changes. Staff will open a ticket with you to request changes or to make a new character.
There is a two week limitation of active gameplay on new characters. This means that your character has the below limits placed on them until two weeks of active (you must be actively playing on the server) real time have passed since your new character was approved. Active gameplay must include interacting with others in character.
✅ You can:
- Visit and roleplay with characters who were bonded to your previous character.
- Do small fair trades for simple resources with characters who were bonded to your previous character. (No guns, ammo, or armor. The trade must not overly benefit one side in a way that can be interpreted as unfair favoritism.)
❌ You cannot:
- Bond with characters your previous character(s) were bonded to.
- Rejoin your old faction(s).
- Rejoin old safehouses.
- Take items from old safehouses (including vehicles).
- Obtain items from your old characters. (This includes trading with others for them.)
- Use any in-character knowledge any of your previous characters learned aka meta-gaming.
Once the two weeks is over, you are free to fully bond with characters that were bonded to previous characters. This includes them trading or gifting you items (that were NOT owned by any of your previous characters).
The following are permanently limited:
- You cannot use any in-character knowledge any of your previous characters learned.
The following are permanently limited unless you submit a ticket and obtain Character Mentor approval after the two week limitation period:
- You cannot rejoin any factions your previous character(s) were in.
- You cannot rejoin a safehouse of any factions your previous character(s) were in. (While not being in said faction.)
- You cannot obtain loot (any items or vehicles) from your previous character(s). This includes vehicles you had access to on you
👊 Character Conflicts
You cannot start a conflict with a character whom had a conflict with any of your previous characters until two weeks of real time has passed from the date of your new character's approval. This applies to you and the other people involved. If conflict organically grows due to general roleplay on the server, a ticket must be submitted to discuss with Character Mentors. The continuation of the conflict will be approved or denied.
Consequences of Breaking NLR
If someone is caught breaking NLR, there are several potential consequences. Small breaks, such as RP related ones, will result in a warning. More serious breaks, such as obtaining unauthorized items, will result in a forced death of the character as well as a warning or ban depending on severity.
If your character is forced to graveyard, you are still held to NLR and other character limitations. The 2 characters created per 30 days will still be in effect.
Players who knowingly assist others in breaking NLR rules will receive a warning. Multiple warnings, even for offenses unrelated to NLR, may result in a ban.
Any attempts to find loopholes in these rules may result in a ban.
